On display in the lobby of the Media Lab complex on the MIT campus, this exhibit was conceived to complement the Boston Lyric Opera’s premiere of Media Lab professor and celebrated composer Tod Machover’s, and librettist Simon Robson’s, new opera, Schoenberg in Hollywood.

Visitors are given a rare glimpse into the creative life of Arnold Schoenberg, one of the twentieth century’s greatest composers, and how this complex and brilliant man inspired for Machover’s newest work. Videos and archival materials trace Arnold Schoenberg’s musical roots in Vienna, to his subsequent life as an exiled composer in Hollywood following Hitler’s rise to power, to the creation the multi-sensory opera that pays tribute to Schoenberg’s musical genius.

Elements that focus on Schoenberg’s life and music will include high-resolution digital materials on loan from the Schoenberg Center in Vienna, most of which have never before been shown in the Boston area.

The Media Lab offers special thanks the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, for its collaboration in mounting this exhibit.
